Michael Anissimov linked to an article explaining that  “Rhesus monkeys have a form of self-awareness not previously attributed to them.”   As self-awareness lies at the core of full artificial general intelligence, the easier it is for this to be achieved in nature the less challenging it will probably be for programmers to infuse self-awareness into their AIs.  Furthermore, as neuroscientists can more extensively experiment with monkey brains than with human brains it will be less challenging for them to locate the neurological basis of self-awareness in monkeys than in people.
